Zagreb Market

We landed at the airport and had no idea where we were staying. This is during my younger days, before I realized the importance of itineraries and something called “planning.” We hopped on a random bus, got yelled at by the driver in Croatian to which we could only shrug until he stopped (we later learned we were underpaying the fare and the airport brochure we were relying on didn’t reflect a recent price increase), and eventually stumbled into a nice hostel. The receptionist was overqualified (ABD in a mathematics PhD program), and the world’s worst salesperson. She opened with, “The rooms are €20, but we can go as low as €12.” We said we could make €12 work. The rest of the trip was a whirlwind, a few days in Croatia, a few in Germany, and a few in Switzerland, but I think this farmer’s market was the highlight of the whole thing for me.
